Colleges and the State of Connecticut.Kindergarten is currently using the Voices reading program to explore multicultural literature, to develop social skills, to connect literature to the world around us, and to create a solid foundation of phonics and comprehension skills. Students also participate in sight word study to support reading fluency. The Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics series uses hands-on experiences and fun activities to help students learn and apply a wide variety of math skills and logical reasoning. Religion, Science, and Social Studies receive attention and instruction throughout the Kindergarten curriculum, creating collections between subjects and to real-life experiences.
Grade One-Patricia Timmeny
In the 1st grade, students continue with Voices, our reading program, which is a wonderful tool to help instill values. It uses Multi-Cultural Books to teach the skills necessary to become a successful reader, writer and speaker. Among many other subjects such as Spanish and Art, students in the first grade learn about our God, the essential fundamentals of Mathematics and their responsibility to the world around them.
Grade Two-Beth Pacelli
The SASB second grade curriculum promotes spiritual, intellectual, social and emotional growth through guided exploration and direct instruction. The religious instruction emphasizes preparation for the students' First Reconciliation and Holy Communion. The Language Arts program focuses on student's increasing their fluency and comprehension of both fiction and non-fiction texts. The curriculum emphasizes phonics, grammar, spelling and writing skills. In mathematics, students learn addition and subtraction of one and two digit numbers, time, problem solving, measurement, money, and the introduction of fractions and geometry.
The Social Studies program helps students develop an understanding of government at both the state and federal levels. Students learn the value of being a good citizen. Through our Science program, students explore the different facets of the world. This program covers areas such as matter, energy, weather, soil, nutrition, life cycles, mass and magnets. The hands on activities allow students to have an understanding of our world.
Grade Three-Carolann Slayton
The greatest emphasis in Grade three is that everyone tries to live their lives as Jesus asked us to live. One way of doing this is to resolve conflicts the way Jesus asked to do, by forgiving others and not holding grudges. Independent work and learning how to complete work independently, is the focus of the classroom centers. There are centers for Reading, Language Arts, Religion, Math, Science and Social Studies. Working in centers enables the students to work at their own pace while enjoying “hands on” activities. There are also daily small group activities, teacher lead, to allow for differentiation and to encourage appropriate social skills and polite manners while having discussions for both Reading and Math. This is balanced with Cooperative Learning Skills. Students work together in pairs or small groups to complete Math assignments or work on Reading or Writing skills.
Grade Four-Toni Boynton
Among some of the areas of focus in grade four include learning about regions and territories of the United States, examining matter, energy, plants and animals and habitats (which include setting up and observing ecosystems). Our year long concentration in Religion is the Ten Commandments the Beatitudes. In addition, we look at the history of Connecticut and our field trips, which include Old Sturbridge Village, are tied into the curriculum. The theme in grade four is love of God and neighbor. We look for ways in which to carry out the message of the Gospel in our school and in our everyday life through corporal and spiritual works of mercy.
Grade Five-Sherri Criscuolo
The Fifth grade curriculum strives to emphasize the education of the whole child through inter-cooperative activities, differentiated learning and reaching all children through the multiple intelligences. As part of the daily religion curriculum the students develop a prayer life, an appreciation of the sacraments and learn about the celebration of the Eucharist. They are exposed to a variety of literature in developing their comprehension skills through our Voices Reading program while infusing the 6 pillars of Character education. Students practice different types of writing such as expository and narrative writing as well as following the rules of grammar. Intermediate math provides experiences in number concepts and computation and applying these to whole numbers, decimals, fractions and mixed numbers. Geometry and areas of algebra are also introduced. The social studies program is a comprehensive study of America democracy and interdependence of all people. Geography and history are fused together to foster an understanding of how our country began to where it is in the present. Developing study skills as well as working independently are two strong work areas cultivated in the fifth grade classroom.
Science-Michael Celentano
The middle school Science curriculum is a challenging one. Grade 5 is introduced to Earth, Life and Physical Science. Grade 6 concentrates on studying the Earth and Space with emphasis on plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, Astronomy and weather. Grade 7 studies Life Science. Students encounter the microscopic world, body systems, DNA and a wide variety of other areas. Grade 8 explores the world of Physical Science. They are introduced to Chemistry and chemical reactions, the periodic table, motion forces and energy. Emphasis is placed on hands- on learning in the forms of labs, projects and experiments.
Mathematics-Cheryl Anastasio
We believe that all children come to school with an eagerness to learn. They should enjoy school and try to learn something new every day. Mathematics needs to be a hands on, cooperative learning experience. The students need to see it, hear it, grasp it, and understand it in order to consistently progress. The new concepts build on previously taught material. In middle school, students focus on Pre - Algebra and Algebra so they have a good base of knowledge and are prepared for high school.
We also offer advanced Mathematics courses in grades six through eight to challenge those students whose mathematical ability allows them to take advantage of the worthwhile endeavor.
Language Arts-Linda Couden
The Language Arts Curriculum is based on literature and language arts skills. These skills include emphasis on written expression, correct usage, mechanics and oral language.
Literature includes reading various genres such as short stories, nonfiction pieces and poetry. Comprehension, literary analysis, and vocabulary development are areas stressed in the literature strand.
Geography and Social Studies-Daniel Garrita
In American History we will be focusing on events which have molded our country. Throughout the year students will form connections to events and develop an understanding of how historical events can influence the future.
In Geography students will develop an understanding of how diverse the world can be. We will focus on the diversity of cultures and countries. Throughout the year students will begin to have an understanding of globalization and its effects on the world.
In Ancient Civilization students will examine the cultures of the ancients. We will discuss the developments which these civilizations made and how their contributions impacted our society today. Throughout the year students will begin to see that although civilizations developed thousands of miles apart and thousands of years apart, people tend to think alike.
In Voices we will create a voice for ourselves. Students will learn basic writings skills. Students will put these skills to the test by developing creative writing prompts. In addition, we will develop our critical thinking skills through monthly book reports.
